After weeks of transforming its approach to concussions and its research into their long-term effects among players, the NFL Draft not only announced Sunday that it would support research by its most vocal critics but also conceded publicly for the first time that concussions can have lasting consequences.
“It’s quite obvious from the medical research that’s been done that concussions can lead to long-term problems,” the league spokesman Greg Aiello said in a telephone interview. He was discussing how the league could donate $1 million or more to the Center for the Study of Traumatic Encephalopathy at Boston University, whose discoveries of brain damage commonly associated with boxers in the brains of deceased football players were regularly discredited by the NFL Draft

It's so tough for offensive lineman to get the recognition their due, more so for guards as tackles have started getting most of the O-line glory these days (Orlando Pace, Tony Boselli, Jonathan Ogden, etc).

This is an outstanding column! Don was one of the men that changed the NFL into an offensive league. That was as important to the popularity of the league today as any other single thing. What makes you such a great writer on sports is your knowledge and feel for the history of the game.

Hey Crazy,

I didn't know much about Don so this was a great read for me.

He had a hand in Joe Gibbs and John Madden's careers, two Hall of Famers, which is pretty impressive.

Hopefully Kellen Winslow's cries for justice are heard and we get this man into the Hall where he rightfully belongs.

Great post as I had no idea of Coryell's coaching tree.

I must say that I not only attended, but stayed through the entire Freezer Bowl. What high-powered offense wouldn't get shut down by that kind of weather?!!!

Two things crack me up about Coryell. The first being his in-game facial expressions. Sure he was intense, but he had a look of his shoes were too tight.

Secondly, his look made me think he was an intense, tough guy ... and probably so ... but then I discovered that he had a lisp, which didn't fit his personality.

Nonetheless, a great coach ... and his offenses were awesome!

Players from past eras tend to be passed over in favor of players from the modern era ... after all, that's who the voters and the fans know ... thus one of the problems ... and one of the reasons you're doing this site.

Some points you don't make: Larry Wilson, a contemporary of Robinson (BUT he played in the NFL) was inducted as soon as he was eligible. He never played a post-season game. Robinson's stats are virtually identical to Wilson's, AND Robinson has three American Football League Championships and a Super Bowl Championship (a game in which he played with two broken ribs, and had a fumble recovery and an interception). If Robinson had played in the NFL he would have been inducted long ago. His teammates and adversaries have said that he was a better db than recent inductee and teammate Emmitt Thomas.

You talk about NFL bias, yet your list of 1960 draftees perpetuates it.

Billy Cannon was drafted by the Rams, AND the AFL Oilers. He played for the AFL Oilers.

Robinson was drafted by the Lions, AND the AFL Texans. He played for the AFL Texans/Chiefs.

Ron Mix was drafted by the Colts, AND the AFL Boston Patriots. He played for the AFL Chargers.

Abner Haynes was drafted by the Steelers, AND the AFL Texans. He played for the AFL Texans/Chiefs.

Curtis McClinton was drafted by the Rams, AND the AFL Texans. He played for the AFL Texans/Chiefs.

The NFL immediately started the false claim that the early AFL didn't have any good players.
